Signs You Need to Buy New Boat Trailer Bearings

As with any component in your boat trailer, wheel bearings don’t last forever and there will come a time when you’ll have to replace them with new ones. That said, you have to be really sure that your bearings have outlived their usefulness, otherwise you’ll be spending time and money on new trailer parts just to replace a few bits that still could’ve given you some mileage.

The first thing you must do is to inspect your bearings for any signs of wear and tear. If the rings have serious scratches, then it’s likely they’ve sustained serious damage on the road. However, it’s possible to “fix” this problem by greasing (a.k.a. ‘repacking’) your bearings so that they spin more freely. If this doesn’t cut it, then your best bet is to have them replaced.

Of course, it’s also possible for your bearings to show no visible signs of damage and still cause you problems while driving. So, the second thing you must do is to spin your wheels by hand and listen for any unusual noises. If you hear a grinding sound whenever your wheels spin, it’s caused by either a bad bearing or a broken spindle. On the other hand, if you hear a faint sound of friction but the wheels spin freely anyway, then your bearings simply need to be repacked.
