As important as it is to care for your boat, cleaning and maintaining its trailer is just as essential. If your trailer gives out when you’re cruising on a highway on your way to the beach or lake, it could end up being disastrous for a lot of people including yourself. Note that one of the most important aspects of boat trailer maintenance is lubricating or greasing its bearings.

Lubrication affects the life, torque, speed, noise, temperature, and rust prevention of a trailer wheel bearing. This being the case, when a bearing performs under demanding conditions, lubrication becomes crucial. Grease is an oil type lubrication that has been added with thickener to prevent oil migration from the lubrication site.

To do this, start by jacking the trailer up and removing the lug nuts and the wheels using a lug wrench. Then the hub dust cap must be pried off so you can determine whether or not you need to replace any bearings. With a brush and pan of kerosene or gasoline, clean off as much dirt and old grease as possible from the inner and outer bearings. Then a thorough inspection of the bearings and other parts should be done to determine if replacements are necessary, followed by packing the bearings with grease, either by a bearing packer, a grease gun, or by hand.
