To get the most out of a trailer, owners must make sure that the various parts of their trailers are maintained properly and regularly. Doing so ensures the safety of the owner and everyone else on the road, not to mention the vessel the trailer is carrying. With that in mind, here are a few maintenance tips to help keep your trailer running at peak condition.

Before hooking your trailer up to your truck, be sure to take the time to grease up the wheel bearings, winch, tongue jack, springs, ball hitch, and pretty much every component that moves. By greasing up these vital parts, the friction is significantly reduced, thus extending the lifespan of the parts and improving performance.

An accumulation of saltwater can really ruin the metal components of a trailer.

If your trailer’s brakes have become worn out, be sure to replace them before returning to the road. Fortunately, reputable trailer parts suppliers offer a variety of brake parts at reasonable prices.

Lastly, take the time to check your tire pressure before leaving on a trip and before returning home. Inflating your trailer tires improperly can result in a blown tire while you’re driving down the highway. Even if you avoid such a dangerous situation, improperly inflated tires also cause trucks to overwork themselves trying to pull the load behind it, resulting in greater gas consumption.
