Your boat trailer is a hardworking piece of equipment that you should regularly maintain. Without proper maintenance, you could be setting yourself up – as well as your beloved boat – for trouble.

Axle failure and how to prevent It

Axle failure is one of the common reasons boat trailers break down. The axle supports the weight of the trailer as well as its contents, and allows the wheels to spin freely, hence a defective axle can pose a serious threat to your safety. The key to preventing such a terrible situation is preventive maintenance.

Over time, moisture and grime can accumulate around the trailer axle and lead to increased friction, which can cause significant damage. It is recommended that trailer axles be serviced annually, or at least every 12,000 miles. During these annual inspections, a mechanic will be able to replace any worn parts and adequately lubricate the bearings, ensuring that your boat trailer axle is in tip-top shape.

What are the consequences of poor maintenance?

Axles in dire need of servicing can cause trailer wheels to wear quickly and unevenly, posing even more danger to the driver and his cargo. In fact, one of the worst things that could happen is a wheel coming off of the trailer while it’s on the road. When this occurs, see to it that you safely pull over to the side of the road, have your axle repaired, and never neglect your trailer’s regular maintenance ever again.
